Maryland Writers' Association

2008-09 Officer Elections

Congratulations to the 2008-2009 MWA Election Winners!

Taking office July 1, your new officers are:

President

Scott Morrow

"I have been a member of MWA since 1986. I have served three terms as President, two as Conference Coordinator, Co-Membership Director, and several terms as a Member-at-Large.

"As a former member of the bylaws committee that first reorganized The Writers' Association of Anne Arundel County (TWAAC) from a local writers group into the state-wide Maryland Writers' Association, I've had a personal interest in seeing that our growth proceeds in a manner that preserves the integrity and vision of our founders. I would like to continue MWA's expansion through establishing more chapters throughout the state and initiating more projects and services.

"I am primarily a scriptwriter, though I have also written articles, restaurant reviews, and comic essays. I have written several one-act plays, three musicals (I am also a songwriter and musician), and many radio plays and skits. I am currently working on screenplays."

"Although I have been a member of MWA for less than a year, I attended the conference and frequently attend monthly meetings. My experience in other writing organizations includes serving as a founding member and treasurer of Whispering Prairie Press, the publishing arm of the Kansas City Writers Group. I was also managing editor of the Press's first publication, an anthology entitled Beginning From the Middle.

"Before moving to Maryland, I was editor of Best's Review, an international insurance trade magazine, published by A.M. Best Co. in Oldwick, New Jersey.

"I've published short stories in literary and commercial magazines, and served as a fiction editor for Potpourri magazine, published in Prairie Village, Kansas. I am currently working on a novel.

"I think I can bring some fresh ideas to the board, and I am a willing worker."

Program Director

Ann Arbaugh

"Ann Arbaugh is an accountant and writer. She served as reporter and associate editor for a local homeowners association where she's had many articles. Her poetry appears in the Villa Julie College Literary publication Spectrum and Poet's Ink. Her current project is a biography of a Maryland woman.

"A member of MWA since 2004, Ann served as volunteer coordinator at the 2006 & 2007 Conferences and as the 2007-2008 President. She, along with help from other board members, also took on the duties of program director for the last several months.

"'I've enjoyed serving with our current Board and working with our members. If elected for the coming year, I'll continue to work with others to promote all aspects of MWA. I've already started work on some workshops and social events for the coming months. Some of these will be held in areas where members have expressed interest in organizing new chapters. Encouraging members to participate is another key goal for the new year.'

"Ann lives in Reisterstown with her son, two birds, and many fish. Her other interests include mentoring students at VJC, horseback riding, and she's a great cook."

Membership Director

Eileen Haavik McIntire

"I have written, edited and produced publications of all types in my various professional careers with the government as well as with nonprofit agencies and associations. My nonfiction articles have appeared in national magazines, including Popular Photography, Highlights for Children, and Motor Boating & Sailing. For more than 14 years, I have been co-owner of an independent publishing company, Summit Crossroads Press, and online bookstore, ParentSuccess.com. From 1994-2000, I was president of the MidAtlantic Book Publishers Association. Members-at-Large

Ally E. Peltier

"I would like to nominate myself for a Member at Large position, in which I hope to serve as a representative of the general membership. As a member of the Board I will strive to voice the opinions and ideas of the general membership and seek to help the MWA community thrive. I have been a member of the MWA Baltimore chapter since its founding a year ago. I am currently serving as the Anthology Editor and am helping the MWA to make its first anthology of members' writing a reality. I also co-moderate the Columbia Fiction Critique Group. My past experience has included eight years on the Board of Directors for a small nonprofit organization, during which time I helped organize countless workshops and celebrations and wrote promotional materials (website, brochures, fliers, etc.).

"I am a full time freelance editor, writer, and publishing consultant with nearly a decade in the business and a strong dedication to educating fellow writers about the publishing industry and how they can improve their chances of getting published. My nonfiction has appeared in numerous print and web venues including Writer's Digest, The Writer, SparkNotes Philosophy 101, and j3tlag.com. I also ghostwrite books and teach writing workshops at conferences, Anne Arundel Community College, and Howard County Community College. I'm working on getting my short fiction published."

Paul Lagasse

"I've been a full-time freelance writer and editor since January, 2001, working for a wide range of clients in the metro Baltimore-Washington region. One of my feature articles won the 2001 John Southam Award. My YA novel Seeing Through Clouds came out in 2006 and I'm currently writing two more novels and researching a historical biography.

"I've been a member of MWA for about 5 years. With the help of immediate past VP Sonia Linebaugh and by lining up two co-sponsor organizations, I launched the Baltimore Chapter, MWA's first and so far only chapter. I was recently re-elected for a second term as Chapter President. I'm also the MWA Webmaster."

"If elected, I'd like to work with the Board to help bring more chapters on line. I believe that a robust statewide network of chapters is essential for MWA's continued development."
